Bernard's early goal earned Everton their first win of the season - and helped boss Marco Silva taste victory against former club Watford.
Going back to the 2018/19 campaign, The Toffees have been miserly in defence at Goodison Park: last conceding in a 2-0 defeat to champions Manchester City in early February.
After the game, Toffees boss Silva said he wanted the Blues' home patch to be "a fortress".
"My style and my philosophy is I like to play offensive football. Keeping clean sheets is important," he said.
Bernard's near-post strike gave Everton a lead they never relinquished and Watford generally struggled to break down their hosts, although Craig Dawson did see a header hit the crossbar.
