World champions France struggled to victory on their trip to Reykjavik tonight, whilst European champions Portugal recorded a comfortable victory.
France ground out a 1-0 victory against Iceland thanks to a second-half spot-kick converted by Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud. Les Bleus stay second in Group H, but are now six points clear of Iceland in third.
Group leaders Turkey maintained their advantage, but needed an injury-time winner from Everton striker Cenk Tosun to beat Albania 1-0. France and Turkey will face each other on Monday with the former targeting top spot.
Elsewhere, Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonçalo Guedes were on target as Portugal closed in on a berth at Euro 2020 with an easy 3-0 win over Luxembourg.
Portugal remain second in Group B, five points behind Ukraine who defeated Lithuania 2-0, but four points clear of Serbia in third. Fernando Santos' side will aim to close the gap on leaders Ukraine when they travel to Kiev on Monday.
