Claudio Ranieri had been named the new head coach of Italian side Sampdoria, after ending a caretaker spell in charge of Roma at the end of last season.
The former Leicester City coach caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of sport, winning the 2015/16 Premier League with The Foxes, before being sacked the following season after a run of poor results.

The Italian then moved to French team Nantes where he only lasted a season, with mixed success, before moving back to the Premier League for a disappointing spell at Fulham.
A Roman himself, Ranieri returned to his childhood team last season replacing di Francesco as manager for his second time in charge but ultimately missed out on a top four spot.
Di Francesco, who received huge plaudits while in charge of Sassulo, was given his chance at a top Italian side in Roma, but after failing, looked to stabilise his career with Sampdoria.
He ultimately failed once again, losing six of the opening seven games, before being fired, whilst also having difficulties with key players, such as top scorer Fabio Quagliarella.
Sampdoria will be Ranieri’s ninth Italian side, with the season still salvageable, but the side from Genoa are in serious need of stability after losing coaches Vicenzo Montella and Marco Giampaolo both to Milan in the past four years.
