Gareth Bale’s equaliser at home to leaders Croatia opened up a tight Group E where Hungary won, meaning Wales still have a very slim chance of qualifying after answering Nikola Vlasic’s opener for the home side.
Wales will need to win both of their remaining two games with Slovakia and Hungary dropping points, as the latter claimed a win over bottom of the group Azerbaijan thanks to an early Mihaly Korhut goal.
At Hampden Park, one of the stars of the Premier League season, Aston Villa’s John McGinn bagged a first half hat-trick against San Marino to give Scotland a chance at taking part in the Euro 2020 qualifying play-offs, moving a point behind third placed Cyprus.
Lawrence Shankland and Stuart Findlay scored their first international goals, moving the Scots ahead of Kazakhstan who lost to leaders Belgium. Russia joined Belgium in qualifying for next summer’s tournament with a 5-0 win away in Cyprus that featured a Denis Cheryshev double.
Poland also qualified for Euro 2020 with a 2-0 home win over North Macedonia in Group G, where Austria took control of second place, winning 1-0 away in Slovenia thanks to a Stefan Posch goal.
In Group C, the Netherlands and Germany both won to move three points clear of Northern Ireland topping the group, with both teams ruining each other’s perfect records in their past meetings.
Gini Wijnaldum made in four goals in four games for the Netherlands, scoring two first-half goals in an away win in Belarus that finished 2-1 thanks to a Stanislau Dragun consolation.
While in Estonia, 10-man Germany bagged a 3-0 away win with an Ilkay Gundogan double and Timo Werner strike after Emre Can’s 14th minuted red card.
