Lionel Messi won a record sixth Ballon d’Or in Paris ahead of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi won La Liga with Barcelona whilst scoring a ludicrous 51 goals in 50 games in all competitions, despite losing an astonishing Champions League semi-final to the award’s betting favourite, and eventual winner of Europe’s top competition, Virgil van Dijk.

The record sixth win of football’s premier individual award puts Messi one ahead of rival and Serie A winner Cristiano Ronaldo who didn’t attend the ceremony.

There were four players from Liverpool’s Champions League winning squad in the top 10, while treble winner with Manchester City, and AFCON winning captain, Riyad Mahrez made it in alongside UEFA Nations League winner Bernando Silva.
