West Ham keeper David Martin's howler was pounced on by Oliver McBurnie as Sheffield United beat the Hammers 1-0 at Bramall Lane on Friday night.
In what was generally a closely-fought game, David Moyes' visitors were left rueing a clanger from keeper Martin whose terrible goal-kick was seized upon by John Fleck, who set up McBurnie to score his fourth of the season early in the second half.
The Hammers pushed for an equaliser and thought they had found it when Robert Snodgrass netted in injury-time, only for the goal to be disallowed after the ball was adjudged to have hit Declan Rice's arm in the build-up.
Defeat leaves West Ham two precarious points above the relegation zone, while Chris Wilder's Blades leapfrog Man Utd to go fifth in the Premier League table.
