Erling Braut Håland’s meteoric rise to stardom continued in stunning fashion as he gave Borussia Dortmund a 2-1 first leg lead over PSG, while Atlético Madrid take a 1-0 advantage to Anfield.
An expected goal-fest at Signal Iduna Park started off as a cagey affair with Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho outshining PSG’s Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in a goalless first-half.
But after the break Dortmund’s Raphaël Guerreiro’s first time shot hit Håland who scrambled the ball into the net for the lead.
PSG struck back on the 75th minute with some superb skill from Mbappe finding Neymar for a tapped-in equaliser, but just a minute later, Håland received Gino Reyna’s pass outside the box before unleashing a winning bullet into the top corner for his 11th goal in seven Dortmund appearances.
Meanwhile in Madrid, there was far less drama after Atlético Madrid took an early fourth minute lead over Champions Liverpool through Saúl Ñíguez.
Some poor defending from a corner saw the ball deflect off Liverpool midfielder Fabinho gifting Saúl an easy tap-in, allowing Atléti to activate their full defense mode.
The best chance of the remaining 86 minutes fell to Mohamed Salah for an unmarked header, but Liverpool failed to create anything else of note against Atlético’s staunch defence, and the two sides will meet again at Anfield in a second leg likely to entertain far more.
