Aston Villa jumped out of the Premier League relegation zone with a vital 1-0 win over Arsenal at Villa Park on Tuesday night.

After a superb win over Manchester City on Saturday in the last four of the FA Cup, the Gunners were short on energy and ideas and never really put Pepe Reina's goal in danger. Villa, on the other hand, knew that a good result would put them in a superb position for Premier League survival.

The hosts took the lead after Conor Hourihane’s wicked corner swerved across the box and was met by Trezeguet with a powerful first-time finish.

In the second-half, both teams had chances to score. but it ended in a narrow victory for Dean Smith's side that puts their fate in their own hands ahead of Sunday's crucial clash away at West Ham.

Arsenal remain 10th in the table and can only now qualify for European competition next season by either winning this term's Europa League or the FA Cup final.

Manchester City cruise past relegation-threatened Watford

Raheem Sterling took his season tally to 29 goals in all competitions as Manchester City earned a 4-0 victory at Watford, just two days after Nigel Pearson was sensationally sacked.

The English winger struck twice before half-time, firing in a rising shot to open the scoring from Kyle Walker's cross and then doubling his tally with a slotted finish from a fortuitous rebound after Ben Foster saved his initial penalty.

In the second-half, the visitors controlled the game and ended up scoring another two goals through Phil Foden, who converted another rebound after Foster had denied Sterling a hat-trick, and Aymeric Laporte who headed home a fourth from Kevin De Bruyne's superb cross.

After Aston Villa's win, Watford drop into the relegation zone with a daunting trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal on Sunday's Premier League finale. Man City remain in second place, just three goals shy of 100 Premier League goals this season.
