Dominic Calvert-Lewin's headed winner edged Everton past Tottenham with a 1-0 win featuring a handfull of impressive debutant performances, kick-starting their Premier League campaign with three important points.

From the first minute, Everton dominated with a midfield of impressive debutants - James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan - alongside André Gomes.

The visitors could have opened the scoring through Richarlison, but Jose Mourinho's side eventually grew into the game and both Dele Alli and debutant Matt Doherty forced smart saves from Jordan Pickford.

In the second-half, however, the hosts were totally outplayed by Everton, who took the lead courtesy of Calvert-Lewin's brilliant 55th-minute header from Lucas Digne's free-kick.

After Everton's goal, Richarlison twice bent attempts beyond the right-hand post and Calvert-Lewin saw another effort stopped by Hugo Lloris, as Carlo Ancelotti's side remained on the front foot to claim all three points.  .

Tottenham will now play a Europa League qualifying match midweek against Bulgarian side Loko Plovdiv, while Everton will host Salford City on Wednesday in the second-round of the Carabao Cup.

Vardy scores two penalties as Leicester eased past West Brom

A debut strike from new signing Timothy Castagne and a penalty brace from Jamie Vardy saw Leicester City start the season with a 3-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

The first-half was uneventful; the first noticeable danger coming when Harvey Barnes forced two smart saves from Sam Johnstone in the Baggies' goal.

The deadlock was only broken in the second-half, on 56 minutes, when new signing Castagne headed home from close range after a cross from Dennis Praet.

Jamie Vardy wrapped up the points for Leicester with two penalty kicks in the final 16 minutes.

It was a tough top flight start for Slaven Bilic's side who will now host Harrogate Town on Thursday in the Carabao Cup, while Leicester entertain Burnley next week in the Premier League.
