As Tuesdays go, it was about as positive as it can get for Aston Villa, with captain Jack Grealish signing a new five-year contract, Villa followed it up by overcoming Burton Albion in the League Cup with a debut goal from record signing Ollie Watkins.

Grealish also scored late on in the 3-1 win that sent Villa through to the third round, with an insurance goal from Keinan Davis.

Newcastle also had a similarly positive night, with new signing Ryan Fraser netting the winner in a 1-0 victory over Blackburn, while Fraser’s former side, Bournemouth, had the most dramatic victory of the round, knocking Crystal Palace out on penalties.

After a goalless 90 minutes, both sides then decided to show off their finishing in the shootout with 10 rounds each of perfect penalties, before both team’s goalkeepers, Wayne Hennessy and Asmir Begovic both missed, and Luka Milivojević then failed in his second attempt in the shootout to send Bournemouth through.

Sebastien Haller made a statement of intent after an underwhelming start to life at West Ham netting two goals in a 3-0 win over Charlton with Felipe Anderson bagging the other, while one of the sides they beat to stay up last season, Watford, managed to dispatch Oxford 3-0 in another shootout, after a 1-1 full time result.

Other highlights included a 5-0 drubbing of Bradford by Lincoln, while Daniel Johnson edged Leyton Orient past Plymouth in stoppage time in a 3-2 thriller.
