Aston Villa have confirmed the purchase of 28-year-old goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal on a four-year deal for a fee of £20 million.

Martinez had been on Arsenal’s books for eight years, only making 14 appearances before this season, with six separate loan spells away from the club.

However, following an injury to first choice Gunners keeper Bernd Leno, Martinez stepped in and took the reins in impressive fashion, putting in a string of decent performances, before lifting the FA Cup with a Wembley win over Chelsea in August.

Arteta even had enough confidence in Martinez that he started him in Arsenal’s season opening winner against Liverpool in the Community Shield, despite Leno being back in the matchday squad.

However, a £20 million offer seemed too much for Arsenal to turn down, with Villa bringing in Martinez as their first choice option for this season, replacing Pepe Reina.
