Chelsea are reportedly set to announce the signing of Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes for a fee of €24 million, as Frank Lampard’s faith in record signing, Kepa Arrizabalaga, has fully evaporated.
After another worrying display from £72 million Kepa at the weekend, where he passed an easy clearance straight into Sadio Mane’s path, gifting Liverpool a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fans will be relieved the club are set to bring in a replacement in the coming days.
There were even rumours this week that retired Chelsea advisor, Petr Cech, was set to come out of retirement for a year-long contract to ease the Blue’s goalkeeping woes, but the club are now set to announce the signing of Mendy in the coming days.
Mendy is a 28-year-old Senegalese keeper who impressed at Rennes last season in France’s Ligue 1, after three seasons with Reims previously, he backstopped Rennes to this season’s Champions League with a third-placed finish in 2019/20.
The shot stopper finished with the league’s second best goals against per 90 minutes rate with 0.79, and third best save percentage with 0.78.
Lampard reports Willy Caballero will start against Barnsley on Wednesday and that was always the plan. He says everyone makes mistakes in football and Kepa has to keep working hard to try and cut them out.
