A Bruno Fernandes penalty after the full time whistle, secured Manchester United their first win of the season, in what might have been one of Brighton’s most undeserved losses in their existence, hitting the post on four occasions in a thrilling opening game to the weekend’s action.

United started how they ended their opening day loss to Crystal Palace, with Brighton bossing play before Leandro Trossard struck David De Gea’s post from distance with eight minutes gone, before repeating the feat just over 10 minutes later.

Brighton finally got rewarded for their first-half domination when Bruno Fernandes took down Tariq Lamptey for Neal Maupay to panenka home the game’s opener in the 40th minute, but United got back involved quickly, with Lewis Dunk accidentally deflecting in Nemanja Matic’s clever pullback from a set piece.

To start the second half, a rare piece of magic from United saw Marcus Rashford run rings around the Brighton defence before giving his side a 55th minute lead, but after that it was all Brighton once again.

Solly March made it three posts, before Trossards hat-trick of woodwork struck shots made it four, but the Seagulls eventually got rewarded for their domination, with March scrambling home a last minute equaliser.

But the drama didn’t end there, in one of the final events of the game, Harry Maguire’s headed effort from a corner appeared to strike the hand of Maupay, but the Englishman was denied by referee Chris Kavanagh’s final whistle.

However, after consultation with his VAR team, Kavanagh checked the off-pitch screen and reversed his decision to end the game, granting United a penalty which Fernandes thumped into the top corner to win one of the most chaotic games we will likely see this season.
