Tottenham came from a goal down at home to beat London rivals Chelsea in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup to kick-off their week of their week of three games in six days with a morale-boosting win.
With huge changes to both line-ups, Chelsea started dominantly and eventually took a deserved lead through Timo Werner in the 19th minute when he trapped a cross from the right-handed side and fired through a thicket of legs to beat a helpless Hugo Lloris.
In the second-half, Spurs were close to levelling after debutant fullback, Sergio Reguilon, had a side-footed effort from inside the area pushed over the crossbar by Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, who was also making his first appearance for his new side.
Spurs finally got their reward with seven minutes left to play when Erik Lamela struck the equalizer late on, with Reguilon's cross providing the assist, ending the game 1-1 at full time, and headed straight for penalties.
The first nine spot-kicks were exemplary before Chelsea’s fifth taker, Mason Mount saw his effort hit the post and go wide, securing Jose Mourinho a win over former player Frank Lampard, that gets a tricky week off to a stress-relieving start.
Tottenham will play in just two days in a Europa League play-off against Maccabi Haifa, where a win could take them through to the group stage, before playing again on Sunday against Manchester United in the Premier League, meanwhile Chelsea will play a day earlier against Crystal Palace.
