Dominic Calvert-Lewin notched his second hat-trick in four games as Everton brushed aside West Ham 4-1 in the at Goodison Park, while Manchester United, Newcastle and Manchester City also progressed to the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring early for Everton, with Robert Snodgrass putting West Ham right back in the tie in the first minute of the second half, but further goals from Richarlison, and another two from Calvert-Lewin made it a comfortable win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
And with that hat-trick no player in the country has scored more goals than Calvert-Lewin’s 16 since Ancelotti took over the Toffees last Boxing Day.
Raheem Sterling had a similarly impressive performance for a strong Manchester City side, with the Englishman scoring two goals in a 3-0 away win over Burnley, where summer signing, Ferran Torres, also netted his first goal for the club.
Newcastle had the biggest scare of the night, with cupset specialists, League Two’s Newport County, three minutes from knocking the Magpies out of the competition, before Jonjo Shelvey’s goal cancelled out Tristan Abraham’s fourth minute opener and earnt a penalty shoot-out.
Much-maligned £40 million record signing, Joelinton, missed his spot kick giving Newport an early advantage, but after that his teammates were flawless, earning a 5-4 shootout win.
And in the night’s final fixture, Manchester United made easy work of Brighton after their extraordinarily lucky win over the Seagulls in the league at the weekend, with second half goals from Scott McTominay, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba securing a 3-0 win.
