Barcelona fans have finally got their way, with president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigning from his role as club president on Tuesday afternoon, rather than waiting for a fans’ vote of confidence.
Bartomeu has overseen a disastrous spell as club president, which almost culminated in the departure of their greatest ever player, Lionel Messi, during the summer.
More than 20,000 supporters signed a petition to oust Bartomeu earlier in the month, triggering a vote of no confidence between Barcelona’s ‘socios’ (club shareholders).
Instead, Bartomeu has stepped down ahead of that vote, taking his board of directors with him as Barcelona begin a search for a new president to turn around what has been a tumultuous time in the club’s history since 2014.
Former president Joan Laporta has been linked with a return, along with names such as Víctor Font and Jordi Roche, while the news could also spell an early departure for Ronald Koeman.
