Former Premier League prospect, Duncan Watmore, has signed for Championship side Middlesbrough as a free agent after ending his seven-year spell at Sunderland.

Watmore was a recognisable face for Premier League fans, coming through as a well regarded England U21 international in 2015, scoring early on against the likes of Norwich and Stoke in the top flight, helping Sunderland survive in 2015/16 before their back-to-back relegations.

But after racking up an impressive 37 Premier League appearances in two seasons for a youngster, Watmore only featured 34 times in the following three campaigns, before being released from his contract last season.

The now 26-year-old had been training with Championship side Boro for the last few weeks, and today signed a short-term contract with the club until January.

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock commented, “I’m ever so pleased we’ve been able to get him on board, he’s done very well in training and he’s a smashing lad. He fits in really well in the dressing and I’m hoping that he can give us a bit of something different.

“It’s only a short-term contract and it’s up to him to show us that he deserves a longer one.”
