Spain broke out of their recent funk with an astonishing record 6-0 defeat over Germany tonight in the UEFA Nations League featuring a world-class hat-trick from Manchester City’s Ferran Torres.
Spain boss Luis Enrique gave a rare opportunity to an out and out striker, playing Alvaro Morata up top, and he was quickly rewarded when the Juventus striker rose at the far-post to not in a sublime corner from Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz.
City’s Torres then put Spain firmly in control, smashing home a rebound from Dani Olmo’s header off the bar before his club teammate Rodri made it 3-0 before the break with another header from a corner.
And 10 minutes after the break things started getting embarrassing for Germany, when Torres’ former Valencia teammate, Jose Gaya, made a superb run and squared the ball for an open goal.
Torres then completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes to play, with acres of time and space to curl past Manuel Neuer, before Gaya got to work again, supplying Mikel Oyarzabal for a 6-0 win that beats Germany’s previous worst defeat of 8-3 against Hungary in 1954, and confirms Spain as winners of Group A4.
There was more drama in an all but decided Group A3, where winners France relegated Sweden thanks to two goals from Olivier Giroud in a 4-2 win, while Croatia, joint on three points with Sweden but ahead on goal difference, succumbed to a 3-2 defeat against Portugal that saw a surprise brace from Mateo Kovačić, and an even more surprising double from Ruben Dias.
How about this for a goal? 🇪🇸
