Chelsea are top of the Premier League for the first time under Frank Lampard, building on recent performances with another win and a clean sheet against a lifeless Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

With four wins on the bounce and only a single goal conceded in six, things were looking up for the Blues, who got off to a sharp start with Timo Werner drawing a fine save from Karl Darlow, before Darlow then denied Tammy Abraham’s point-blank header from a stunning Hakim Ziyech cross.

Chelsea’s dominance paid off though, when Federico Fernandez fluffed his clearance and bundled Mason Mount’s cross into his own net, for a 10th-minute own-goal opener, allowed to stand despite a slight push from Ben Chillwell.

Chelsea continued to push, with Werner flashing a golden chance wide after being teed up by Abraham, before squandering an even bigger chance, robbing a dreadful Fabian Scharr before passing up the opportunity to score by squaring an awful pass open-goal pass into the feet of Newcastle’s Fernandez.

But with 25 minutes to go, and little in the way of a threat from Newcastle, Werner’s persistence eventually paid off, bursting through midfield and defence before laying off Abraham for an insurance goal that moves Chelsea top of the Premier League, albeit with a game more played than their closest opponents.
