Reports out of Italy and Germany suggest Liverpool have entered the race to secure the signature of Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, with the Reds becoming one of five clubs hoping to lure the world-class Austrian.

Alaba, who’s earned a reputation as one of the game’s best defenders in recent years, excelling as both a left back and centre back, played an integral role in Bayern Munich’s treble last season, and now appears to want a new challenge as he becomes a free agent in the summer.

The Guardian and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano had previously reported Real Madrid were favourites after Alaba had informed his representatives the Spanish capital was his preferred destination, but now Liverpool are believed to be one of the five clubs involved in courting the player.

Sky Sport Germany and Romeo Agresti are reporting the Reds have offered Alaba a £9 million a year deal, the equivalent of £173,000 a week, which would make the Austrian one of Liverpool’s top earners behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Playing alongside van Dijk next season, Alaba could help solve Liverpool’s defensive crisis, with manager Jurgen Klopp down to zero first choice centre backs this season, having to field midfielder Fabinho alongside youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams following injuries to van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and the unreliable Joel Matip.

Earlier in the month when asked about Liverpool’s impending need to sign a central defender this January Klopp said, “If the world was in a completely normal place and we have this situation, you could be sure we would try everything to do the right thing now. But the world is not in a normal place so I don’t know why we constantly treat a football club like it’s independent from all the other struggles around.

“It is not a time for massive investment if you don’t have the funds for it. Obviously football clubs live off what they earn. We still don’t have supporters in the stadium, a lot of stuff is still different, and that has gone on for a long time.”
