Whiteman for the job at Deepdale

Preston North End have finalised the signing of Doncaster Rovers’ midfielder Ben Whiteman for a fee reportedly in the region of £1.5 million.

The 24-year-old, has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal at Deepdale and will wear the No.17 shirt for the Lilywhites.

Considered one of the best midfielders in League One over recent seasons, Whiteman started out at Manchester United’s academy before joining Sheffield United in 2014. 

Rovers' former captain has racked up nearly 200 appearances as a professional over the past six years, scoring 32 goals in the process.

This season across all competitions, only three midfielders - Bruno Fernandes, Jorge Grant and Scott Twine - have been involved in more goals than Whiteman, who supplied eight goals and six assists for Doncaster prior to his transfer.  

Speaking about his move, Whiteman said the decision to move to the Championship with North End was a 'no brainer'.

“I am over the moon to be at this massive football club," he said.
