Two sides in completely opposing form met in Spain tonight as a Dortmund team with an ever-increasing list of problems faced Europa League kings Sevilla, on a run of nine consecutive wins and looking to prove themselves in Europe’s top competition.

The Action: Sevilla instantly continued their excellent recent form when former Liverpool forward, Suso, found room on the edge of the Dortmund box, sent Jadon Sancho packing and fired a shot in off of Mats Hummels for a 1-0 lead.

Dortmund, low on confidence after a run of terrible performances, were undoubtedly thinking the worst, but it was an unlikely source who got them back in the game quickly after as Mahmoud Dahoud netted a sublime strike from distance in the 19th minute.

Back in the game, Erling Haaland decided to take control, powering at the Sevilla defence before exchanging a quick one-two with Sancho poking home, and just before the break, the Norwegian struck again, guiding the ball home brilliantly after Dortmund capitalised on some horrendous play from Ivan Rakitic.

Sevilla gave themselves hope in the second half when Luuk De Jong prodded home from a set-piece, but a normally chaotic Dortmund managed to secure a huge 3-2 win ahead of the second leg.

The Big Picture: Borussia Dortmund need a top four finish this season to hang on to their superstars and secure any sort of future, but tonight’s result could certainly be a confidence builder. As for Sevilla, they need a much improved second leg if they’re to move up from their reputation as a Europa League only side.

Memorable Moment: While the game was all about Haaland, Dahoud's equaliser was a thing of pure beauty.

          Expected Goals: Sevilla (1.27) 2-3 (1.29) Dortmund

Man of the Match: Haaland's first half performance was from another planet and he now has as many Champions League goals as Ronaldinho

Stat of the Day: Erling Haaland has now scored 18 goals in 15 Champions League games.
