EFL Winners & Losers

Huge results in the Championship and League One help crystalise the promotion and relegation pictures on an ever-busy Saturday of EFL action.

Swansea: Middlesbrough had hardly finished celebrating their stoppage-time equaliser against
Swansea, when yet another late show led to Jake Bidwell winning a 95th-minute penalty for Andre Ayew to dispatch and keep his side well in the running for the Championship’s second automatic promotion spot.

Burton: It was crazy enough what Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was doing with bottom of League One Burton, racking up five of their seven wins this season since arriving in January, but top of the table Peterborough definitely looked a step too far. Yet, somehow, Burton have done it again, beating the Posh 2-1, and moving out of the relegation zone with four straight wins.

Sunderland: Things keep improving for Sunderland under Lee Johnson, and he has Charlie Wyke to thank for much of that, with the forward netting again today in a 2-0 win over Rochdale to make it 20 goals this season, moving the Black Cats up to fourth.

Northampton: In one of the day’s biggest upsets, Northampton registered their biggest win of the season as they pushed aside promotion battlers Portsmouth 4-1.  A Double from Ryan Watson got things started before the Cobblers flew to an unassailable 4-0 first-half lead which lifts them out of the League One relegation zone.

Derby: After an OK start to life in management, things have started to deteriorate for Wayne Rooney, with Derby following up a 4-0 battering from Cardiff with a 1-0 loss to newly-promoted Coventry today.

Sheffield Wednesday: Things haven’t got off to the best start for Darren Moore at Sheffield Wednesday. An opening match against Rotherham midweek should have been the perfect opportunity to start on the right foot, but a 2-1 loss followed. Today things got even worse with a 3-0 defeat against Reading extending the losing streak to six games.

Portsmouth: The end may be nigh for Kenny Jackett. Plenty of Pompey fans wanted a fresh start with a new manager after last season’s play-off final loss, so the pressure was on from the start. Jackett managed to hold much of it at bay with some decent runs, but now edging towards a top-six exit, supporters may soon be proved right.
