After a 2-1 first leg upset by Porto it was all to play for tonight in Turin as the Portuguese champions looked to hold onto that lead against a Juventus side featuring comeback king Cristiano Ronaldo who was famously their nemesis in Europe earlier in his career.
The Action: Getting off to a torrid start, Juventus should have been behind within the first 10 minutes when Mehdi Taremi rattled the bar, but soon after Porto were gifted the lead with Sergio Oliveira scoring from the spot.
Juve failed to respond to going behind, with the away side having the better of the first half, but at the start of the second things were completely different with Federico Chiesa bagging two technically brilliant goals either side of a second yellow for Taremi that left Porto on the rocks.
10-man Porto held on for extra time though despite complete Juve possession to end the game, and with a more even 30 minutes, the Portuguese champions somehow found themselves ahead when Oliveira bagged his second of the night, sneaking an innocent-looking free-kick under Wojciech Szczęsny from miles out.
With five minutes left to play after the goal, Juve gave themselves a last chance through Adrian Rabiot to make it 4-4 on aggregate, but thanks to the away goals rule Sérgio Conceição’s men held on for one of the greatest European nights in recent Portuguese history.
The Big Picture: Andrea Pirlo looks like he’s almost certainly reached the end of the road at Juve now, out of the Champions League and 10 points behind Serie A leaders Inter, the only question is do the club act now or at the end of the season.
Memorable Moment: Sergio Oliviera’s free-kick will undoubtedly live long in the memory of Porto supporters, not just for its importance, but for the ludicrous run-up and the sheer cheek of blasting it under the wall to catch out the goalkeeper.
Expected Goals: Juventus (3.61) 3-2 (1.99) Porto
Stat of the Day: In the past three seasons, Juventus have been knocked out of the Champions League by Porto, Lyon and Ajax.
THIS IS TRULY INCREDIBLE!!!!
