Yesterday's La Liga clash between Cadiz and Valencia was temporarily halted to throw further spotlight on the ongoing issue of racism in football.

Valencia's players walked off the pitch half an hour into the contest after alleged racist abuse was allegedly directed at Bats centre half Mouctar Diakhaby by Cadiz player Juan Cala.

The incident occurred after 29 minutes when Diakhaby collided with Cala as Cadiz launched a free-kick into the Valencia box - however, as the French defender was heading back to his position, he turned suddenly and angrily went back to confront Cala.

Following the incident, Diakhaby was shown the yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct, despite explaining what happened to the referee, and walked off the pitch and down the tunnel alongside his teammates with the score tied at 1-1.

Cameras caught Valencia defender and former Arsenal player Gabriel Paulista saying: “You can’t say Negro de mierda,”, suggesting Cala had said words meaning “sh*tty black” to Diakhaby.

After the Valencia players held a meeting, they returned to the pitch to continue the game around 20 minutes later without Diakhaby.

The game ended with Cadiz winning 2-1 and after the game, the victors issued a statement that read: "We are against any situation of racism or xenophobia, whoever the author, and we work for its eradication. All the perpetrators of these crimes, whether or not they are from our team, must pay for it.

"We do not doubt the honesty of all members of our squad, who are firm defenders of the fight against racism, whose attitude has always been exemplary in all the matches that have been played."

This morning, Cadiz confirmed Cala would address the media on Tuesday after a training session.

In the officials' match report, referee David Medie Jimenez said the alleged phrase was not heard by any member of the refereeing team.

"In the 29th minute I stopped the match due to a confrontation between players from both sides. Player number 12 of Valencia C.F., Mouctar Diakhaby, once booked for arguing with an opponent, tells me word for word: "He called me a s***** black man" in reference to player number 16 of Cadiz C.F. Juan Torres Ruiz (Juan Cala).

"This fact was not perceived by any member of the refereeing team. After a few moments, Valencia C.F. decide to abandon the pitch. For this reason, the match was temporarily suspended. Both sides entered their respective changing rooms. After a few minutes of suspension, the Valencia C.F. delegate David Rangel Pastor, in the presence of Cadiz C.F. delegate Antonio Navarrete Reyes, told us that they had decided to substitute player number 12 Mouctar Diakhaby and continue with the game."
