With Bayern Munich racking up 14 wins out of their last 16, PSG had a tough task coming off of a humbling top of the table defeat against Lille at the weekend, however, against a Robert Lewandowski-less Bayern, there was always a chance.
The Action: After a stunning hat-trick against Barcelona in the previous round, Kylian Mbappe took no time at all to get things started tonight, firing a Neymar assist through Manuel Neuer inside the third minute.
And PSG didn’t let up, with an easy Julian Draxler goal ruled out for offside, but soon after it was two, with Marquinhos beating the offside trap to slot an ever simpler effort past a stunned Neuer.
The first half saw two disruptive Bayern substitutions due to injury, and another sublime performance from Keylor Navas, but it was game on just before the break when Lewandowski’s replacement, Eric Chupo-Moting, expertly headed home.
Bayern continued to threaten Navas in the second 45, with Thomas Muller equalising on the hour mark, but it wasn’t enough to stop Mbappe from deciding the match, with a world-class run and finishing eight minutes later.
The Big Picture: Bayern’s first-half collapse would have certainly come as a surprise to Hansi Flick, but there was more than enough dominance to perform a second leg comeback, keeping a hold on Mbappe will make things difficult though.
Man of the Match: Navas pushes him close with crucial 10 saves, but Mbappe’s world-class performances could be what wins PSG the tournament.
Moment of the Match: Mbappe’s opener was exactly what PSG and the game needed, setting up another night of excellent European entertainment.
xG: Bayern (4.14) 2-3 (1.54) PSG
Stat of the Day: Kylian Mbappé has now been involved in 42 goals in 43 Champions League games (27 goals, 15 assists).
"The way they play is really dangerous, with Lewandowski or without Lewandowski... it's going to be the same hard work in the next game."
