Playmaker favourite, and one of the most talented players the EFL has seen in recent years, Marcus Maddison, has sadly decided to take some time away from the game, saying: “The football industry has eventually broke me.”

27-year-old Maddison, who joined Bolton on loan from Charlton in the January transfer window, has featured 10 times this season with his side battling for promotion, but cited his lack of motivation for the push as one of the reasons he’s stepping away.

“Well the football industry has eventually broke me,” Maddison said in a post on Instagram. “All the abuse, pressures & monotony of the last 2 years has just got to me.”

“I’ve tried to fit in & be happy but if I can’t be happy In a winning team fighting for promotion it’s clearly something deeper. I’m returning home to think do I want to play football any more as it just doesn’t bring me any joy at all.

“I can’t thank Ian Evatt enough for understanding & wish Bolton all the best for the final run in.”

The midfielder/winger hybrid thrilled fans up and down the country during his six-year spell at Peterborough United, outproducing any midfielder in England with his unique and sublime passing and shooting technique.

He also made our team of the year in 2019 after a gigantic 16 goals and 14 assists, while featuring in, and leading, many of our stat graphics.

Bolton released a statement on their website regarding the news with manager Ian Evatt saying: “We would like to thank Marcus for his contribution during his time with us and he leaves with our full support.

“The consequences of the pandemic have brought many challenges to so many people, and Marcus, in particular, has found it exceptionally difficult being away from his young daughter and alone in his hotel room.

“First and foremost, our priority is the well-being of all our staff and players, and Marcus’s best interests are paramount. He is a very talented footballer and everybody at Bolton Wanderers Football Club wishes him well for the future.”

Chairman Sharon Brittan added: “Having spent some time with Marcus over the past couple of weeks, it became clear that he was in need of some additional support.

“Marcus is a lovely man who I really warmed to and we will ensure that he gets the correct support he needs.

“Although his time with the club was relatively short, he will always remain in the Bolton Family.”

Players like Maddison are the reason why many of us love football, with his skill and uniqueness one of the stand-out features in the EFL over the past seven years, but undoubtedly, family and mental health must always come first.

All of us at Playmaker hope Marcus finds some peace during his time away from the game, and wish him and his family well for the future.
