A late Mason Greenwood goal helped Manchester United to edge past Wolves in a 1-0 win at Molineux.
The Action: Summer signings Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane both made their first starts for United, but it was the hosts who were the more dangerous side for large swathes of the contest.
Raul Jimenez and Francisco Trincão both failed to make the most of excellent openings: the Mexican forcing David de Gea into a fine save, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a goal-saving block to deny the on loan Trincão.
In the second-half, United improved, but it was still the hosts who created the best chance to take the lead, a remarkable double-save by David de Gea denying Romain Saiss.
United eventually took the lead on 80 minutes through Greenwood, although the strike was not without controversy. The English teenager took on his man and drilled a low cross-shot beyond José Sá, with the keeper looking like he could do a lot more.
In the build-up, however, Wolves claimed Ruben Neves had been fouled by Paul Pogba, but VAR did not intervene.
The Red Devils took the three points from Molineux, with sensational new signing Ronaldo now waiting in the wings.
Big Picture: In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 100th match as manager of Manchester United, the Red Devils were lucky to bag three points against a Wolves aside who enjoyed the better of the action.
The Red Devils will next host Newcastle after the international break in what will very possibly be Ronaldo's first game back in a United shirt.
Wolves return to action against newly-promoted Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday September 11, as they seek their first Premier League points under Bruno Lage.
Memorable moment: David de Gea's double save midway the second-half was superb. Romaine Saiss attempted twice to beat the Spaniard, but the tremendous reactions of De Gea kept Man Utd in the game.
xG: Wolves (2.01) 0-1 (0.66) Man Utd
Stat of the Day: Manchester United are now unbeaten in their last 28 Premier League away games (W18 D10), establishing a new record for the longest unbeaten away run in English Football League history.
