Lionel Messi toppled another record last night as his hat-trick inspired Argentina to a 3-0 win over Bolivia in their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier in Bueno Aires.

The 34-year-old legend paraded the trophy for La Albiceleste's Copa America win in July prior to the game, and delivered three goals for further celebration.

In addition to his treble, Messi also claimed two records: he has now overtaken Pele as the greatest South American national team goalscorer of all time, while also leapfrogging Luis Suarez as the most prolific South American marksman in World Cup qualifiers.

Afterwards, Messi stated: "I've dreamed of this and, thanks to God, it happened. It couldn't have happened in a better way with my mother and siblings in the crowd. They have suffered with me and I am very happy."

Top all-time South American goalscorers (national teams):

          1. Messi - 79
          2. Pelé - 77
          3. Neymar - 69
          4. Ronaldo - 62
          5. Romário - 56
