Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford will drive up his squad's standards.

After his move from Serie A Juventus, the 36-year-old is set to make his second Red Devils' debut against Newcastle tomorrow.

With Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane also joining United in the summer transfer window, there are expectations that Solskjaer's side are now in a place where they can genuinely challenge defending Premier League champions and crosstown rivals Manchester City.

Solskjaer has confirmed that Ronaldo will play some part against the Magpies on Saturday, and is convinced that Ronaldo's arrival will have a positive effect on the Red Devils both on and off the pitch.

"He will get on the pitch at some point, that's for sure," said Solskjaer.

"There is no place to hide with winners like that. You can't give 95% in training and not be focused. That is what he demands of himself and everyone else.

"Everyone is going to look up to him. He is going to be a leader in this dressing room."

In Ronaldo's last top flight appearance against Newcastle, in January 2008, the Portuguese forward banged in a second-half hat-trick in a 6-0 win and he will no doubt be looking to add to his tally of 84 Premier League goals if he plays some part.
