Rodri's strike gives City treble glory

Manchester City lifted their first Champions League trophy and completed a treble with a 1-0 win over Internazionale in Istanbul.

Action: In truth, it was far from a classic Champions League final, with a 45 first minutes in particular that saw little goal-mouth action – credit must go to some resilient Inter defending for that.

But Bernardo Silva did give Inter an early scare when he was able to advance into the box unchallenged but his effort fired just wide.

Probably the biggest chance of the first half came just before the half-hour mark when Kevin de Bruyne played in Erling Haaland whose shot was blocked by André Onana.

Pep Guardiola was forced into an early change in the 37th minute when Kevin De Bruyne couldn’t recover from an earlier hamstring injury with Phil Foden taking his place.

The second period was a more entertaining contest as Inter looked to tire which inevitably opened up more spaces for City to exploit.

Manuel Akanji did have some hairy moments. His decision to let a back pass roll through to Ederson almost proved costly when Lautaro Martínez picked up on the loose ball. Fortunately for the Citizens, Ederson did well to come out and prevent the danger.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 68th minute. A cutback from Bernardo Silva eventually found its way to Rodri. The Spaniard didn’t have his best game overall but his curling finish went around two Inter defenders and into the back of the net with Onana unsighted.

Inter deserve credit for their attempt to get back in the contest. Just a few minutes later Federico Dimarco was unlucky not to equalise with a header that bounced off the bar before a follow-up that ended up being blocked by his own player, Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku had the best chance for Inter though in the 89th minute. A cross from the right from Marcelo Brozović was headed back across goal into the path of Lukaku. The Belgian striker was able to get a header away from point-blank range but Ederson was able to get something on it to prevent a certain goal.

Ederson was needed again in the final second of the game for another late, crucial save before City were able to celebrate their treble success.

Reaction: Match-winner Rodri, "I’m emotional. This is a dream come true. All these guys around here, waiting 20, 30, 40 years... I have been here just four years but they deserve – I deserve. In the last years we were so close.”

Man of the Match: Until the final few minutes we were going to give this to Rodri but Ederson made two crucial stops to ensure that Manchester City saw out the remainder of the game. His stop to deny Lukaku in particular, was a brilliant instinctive stop.

      xG: Manchester City (0.95) 1-0 (2.07) Internazionale

Stat of the Day: Manchester is the second city to have two winners of the Champions League (City and United) after Milan (Inter and AC).
