91,553 fans filled the Nou Camp to watch El Clásico and set a new world record for women’s football attendance.
Supporters got to see plenty of goals and the home fans will have been especially delighted with the final result as Barcelona won 5-2 to cement an 8-3 aggregate win and progress to the Champions League semi-finals.
The home team opened the scoring after just eight minutes when Mapi León got lucky with her cross that evaded all the players and eventually Madrid goalkeeper María Rodríguez.
But the visitors hit back from the penalty spot when Irene Paredes blocked Olga Carmona’s shot with her hand. Carmona tucked her penalty into the corner past Sandra Paños.
Three minutes into the start of the second half, Claudia Zornoza gave Real the lead with a sensational strike from 40 yards that caught Paños off her line.
Barça responded quickly and put the tie to bed with two goals in quick succession through Aitana Bonmatí and then Clàudia Pina to make it 3-2 and 6-3 on aggregate with 55 minutes gone.
Alexia Putellas eventually got her name on the scoresheet when María Rodríguez could only get a hand to her low shot that eventually squirmed into the net. Caroline Hansen then completed the scoring in the 70th minute when she finished from close range.
Barcelona will face either Arsenal or Wolfsburg in the semi-finals set to be played in late April.
