Power rankings: Boro charging for second place

It’s been a busy week in the top four tiers which is reflected in a very different Power Rankings compared to last week.

Two teams share first place in the top ten which after a few rounds without any League Two representation now sees new entries from the fourth tier.

So, let’s have a look at who made it...

10th, Fulham

The Cottagers moved up to sixth in the table after what could be a huge result in the race for European football spots with a 1-0 win away to Brighton. It might have been a bit of a smash-and-grab performance from Marco Silva’s team but it’s another important three points.

Interestingly, West Ham United are the only team outside of the current top five that Fulham have lost to all season.

9th, Bolton Wanderers

The Trotters' good run came to an end against Wycombe Wanderers last weekend after what had been a run of five wins in a row that included two successive 5-0 victories. But on the bright side they did score the new sponsorship deal from Toughsheet that will give headline writers (ourselves included) a lot of fun in the future.

Attention now turns to the EFL Trophy with Bolton taking on Accrington Stanley in the semi-final on Wednesday before hosting Port Vale in the league again this weekend.

8th, Burton Albion

The Brewers make their first appearance in the Power Rankings this season after four wins in their last five games.

New loan signing Charlie Kirk continued his good start for Dino Maamria’s team with the Charlton Athletic man scoring his second goal in three games for Burton.

"I'm looking up, I want to stop looking down," Maamria said after the game. In this kind of form they should be doing just that.

7th, Burnley

The Clarets have had some close calls in recent games with Watford within seconds of a victory before Michael Obafemi struck late to equalise. Last weekend, a 78th-minute Ashley Barnes penalty was enough to secure the win away to ten-man Luton Town.

But with Sheffield United dropping points, Burnley extended their gap at the top of the Championship further. Vincent Kompany’s team now enjoy a commanding 11-point lead over the Blades.

A trip to the Den in Tuesday evening’s game may take Burnley close to the edge once again.

6th, Leyton Orient

Last 5: WWDWW

Another team at the top of the table with a big lead over the rest is Leyton Orient. Last weekend saw Richie Wellens’ team win 1-0 at home to Crawley Town while second-place Stevenage made it four league games without a win after a defeat away to Stockport County.

Orient are now 13 points clear at the top of League Two with 13 games left to play. A trip to Grimsby Town awaits this weekend.

=4th, Mansfield Town

Last 5: WDWWW

In their last three games, Mansfield Town have won three, scored six, and conceded zero. The Stags are one of a group of teams making a charge for the automatic play-off places which looks very much like it will be Leyton Orient plus two more.

Another team in the mix is Salford City, who Mansfield Town host this weekend – the Ammies defeated Mansfield on the first day of the season back in July.

=4th, Barnsley

Last 5: WDWWW

Barnsley extended their unbeaten run to six with five of those resulting in victory for Michael Duff’s side. Last weekend saw the Tykes 3-0 up away to Cheltenham Town after 36 minutes before Jordan Williams’ goal wrapped up a 4-0 win.

While Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle may well be a bit too far ahead for the chasing pack, Barnsley do have a big game coming up as they welcome the visit of fellow play-off hopefuls Derby County.

=3rd, Stockport County

Last 5: DWWWW

The Hatters moved up to sixth in League Two after a 2-0 win at home to second-place Stevenage on Saturday.

After a tough start to the season following promotion from the National League, Stockport have found their feet and are now in contention for one of the automatic promotion places. Is a double promotion possible?

A short trip to fellow Greater Manchester side Rochdale awaits this weekend.

=1st, Wycombe Wanderers

Last 5: WWWWW

Gareth Ainsworth may not be the Wycombe Wanderers manager for much longer if rumours that Queens Park Rangers are after the former player are to be believed.

It would be a shame for the Chairboys who are just starting to find their form this season with a late charge to the play-off places – Lewis Wing’s goal ended Bolton Wanderers’ good run last weekend.

Next up for Wycombe is a trip to face Shrewsbury Town, it remains to be seen if Ainsworth will still be at the club for that game.

=1st, Middlesbrough

Last 5: WWWWW

It’s five wins in a row for Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough who have undergone a really impressive transformation. The midweek win against Sheffield United closed the gap to second place while also costing Neil Critchley his job with a 3-1 win at the weekend.

The gap between Middlesbrough and Sheffield United is now reduced to just four points although the Blades still have a game in hand. However, considering what great form the Riverside outfit are in, sneaking into second place and an automatic promotion place is very much on the cards.
