Now in charge of footballing operations at Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ruled out mega-money transfers for the likes of Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappé.

The Ineos chairman completed his minority shareholding purchase in the Red Devils last month and is tasked with reestablishing United as a dominant force at home and abroad.

Talking as a guest on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast, the 71-year-old stated his belief that big name signings are not the way forward for United at this juncture.

Asked regarding a potential move for England and Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham, Ratcliffe said: “He is a great footballer. It’s not where our focus is; the solution isn’t spending a lot of money on a couple of great players.

“They have done that, if you look at the last 10 years, they have spent a lot of money on a couple of great players. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes who are managing and organising the club. And make sure we get recruitment right, it is such a vital part of football today.”

Later in the interview, Ratcliffe added: “I would rather sign the next Mbappé rather than spend a fortune buying success. It’s not that clever buying Mbappé. Anyone could figure that one out. More challenging is to find the next Mbappé or next Bellingham or next Roy Keane.”

But what that has brought you is one league title and maybe one and a half good seasons in the Champions League.

As a football fan, I agree with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's stance on Manchester United's transfer approach. Spending big money on a few star players may bring short-term success, but it's not the solution for a dominant team. The focus should be on building a well-rounded and cohesive squad.

It’s a question of how that money has been spent.

As a football fan, I think it's a smart move for Manchester United to focus on building a strong team rather than splashing out on individual players. It's about finding the right balance and utilizing the resources effectively. Excited to see what Sir Jim Ratcliffe brings to the table for the Red Devils!

It has not worked.

As a football fan, I completely agree with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's stance on not splashing out on big name signings like Bellingham or Mbappé. Spending a lot of money on a couple of great players has not worked for United in the past and it's time for a new approach to rebuilding the team.

It is a team sport, and it is not about individuals.

As a football fan, I completely agree with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's comments. Building a strong team is crucial for success, not just investing in a few big name players. I trust his vision for Manchester United and believe that focusing on the team as a whole will lead to long-term success.

It’s about establishing a way of playing, a style of play, a system that works.

As a football fan, I agree with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's opinion on not spending big money on players like Bellingham and Mbappé. What Manchester United needs is a solid team with a clear playing style and system in place. Focusing on individual players won't solve the bigger issues at the club.
