Roberto Martínez is close to becoming the new manager of the Portugal national team according to reports.
Martínez would be replacing Fernando Santos who secured a historic European Championships win in 2016 as well as the inaugural Nations League
According to The Athletic, the former Wigan Athletic and Everton manager has a ‘verbal agreement’ with the Portuguese FA and a deal is expected to be concluded by the end of next week.
Martínez’s spell with Belgium was a mixed one. In six years the manager led the Red Devils to third in the 2018 World Cup but the country’s apparent ‘golden generation’ couldn’t progress from the group stages in the 2022 World Cup in what had been that generation’s swan song.
José Mourinho and André Villas-Boas had both previously been linked with taking the helm of the Portuguese national side.
