Gunners claim opening day win

Arsenal edged a closely-contested affair against Newcastle to ruin Steve Bruce's first game in charge of the Magpies.

Pierre Aubameyang, joint top-scorer in the Premier League last season, netted the Gunners' matchwinner at St James Park to seal three points for Unai Emery's side. 

Arsenal struggled to trouble their hosts in the first-half - with Newcastle's record signing Joelinton showing flashes of intent on his debut.

The only goal of the game arrived on the hour mark when Aubameyang collected Ainsley Maitland-Niles' cross on the edge of the box and fired home.  

With Bruce in the dugout, the closest Newcastle came to a goal was a Jonjo Shelvey effort that hit the woodwork.
