The game finished 2-2 in normal time, as goals from Marcelo and Casemiro for Real were cancelled out by strikes from Diego Perotti and Edin Dzeko for Roma.
A miss from Brazilian defender Marcelo handed Roma a 5-4 win in the shootout - in which Bale scored.
The former Tottenham forward has three years left on his contract at the Bernebeu, and has scored 102 goals in 231 games across all competitions for Real.
