UEFA today confirmed Euro 2020 will be postponed a year, following an emergency video conference between its 55 member nations today, as the coronavirus pandemic takes hold of Europe.
The Italian Football association planned to propose the idea today as it’s Serie A league was the first in Europe to be suspended due to the pandemic as Italy is currently the epicentre of the crisis.
Other European countries are now fully expected to see a steep upward curve in cases, as Russia joined the long list of suspended leagues, with just Turkey still playing.
The postponement could give federations time to complete their 2019/20 leagues before the next season is due to start in August, but evidence suggests Europe is still a long way away from that point with empty stadiums looking like the only solution.
