Liverpool and Manchester United are in talks with a number of other European giants regarding the formation of a European Premier League as revealed by Sky Sports, with a £4.6 billion funding package currently under discussion.
The FIFA-backed project could swamp UEFA’s Champions League, with discussions underway with ‘more than a dozen clubs’ from Europe’s current top five leagues, England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France.
The format, reported to contain up to 18 different teams, could have space for up to five Premier League sides, with the current top six all in contention.
The league campaign would take place during the normal season with a following knockout tournament for highest placed sides to determine a winner, with the Sky Sports report suggesting an announcement could be made later this month, with the tournament lined up for 2022.
