Leeds hold Liverpool on a night marred by Super League

With a rather bizarre feeling at kick-off as Liverpool looked to climb back into the Champions League places, a competition their owners have said they won’t be joining next season, Leeds looked determined to dent those hopes, making their message clear with pre-match t-shirts.

The Action: Liverpool looked just as angry with their American owners as Leeds did, with both sides getting off to a high-intensity high-pressing start, Leeds first winning a big opportunity, latching on to a poor pass from Fabinho, with Alisson bailing out his fellow Brazilian.

With half an hour played though, it was Liverpool who produced a moment of Super League quality, with Diogo Jota finding Trent Alexander-Arnold with a sublime through ball which the flying right back squared to Sadio Mane who couldn’t miss an open goal despite his terrible form.

Leeds then took over in the second half with Alisson and the crossbar both keeping out the hosts despite a string of huge chances, and with three minutes to play, their hard work was finally rewarded as Diego Llorente headed home a Jack Harrison corner.

Quote of the Day: "My opinion didn't change. Obviously I heard for the first time about it yesterday, and trying to prepare a game, a very difficult game against Leeds, and I knew so far we got some information, not a lot to be honest," said Jurgen Klopp.

"It's a tough one. People are not happy about it, and I can understand that, but I cannot say a lot more about it because we were not involved in any processes, not the players not me, we didn't know about it. That's the case or the fact, the facts are out there. We will have to wait to see how it develops."

The Big Picture: Liverpool missed the opportunity to jump into the top four and make the most of their favourable fixture list, how much that Champions League spot matters in the grand scheme of things is hard to know though.
