Needing just a point from their remaining two games to clinch promotion to the Championship, Peterborough slipped up in nervy fashion last time out against Doncaster, and welcoming Lincoln today, things weren’t going to get any easier.
The Action: After giving up a 2-0 lead to Doncaster during the week, the Posh were likely nervous about a similar scare occurring today, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it did. In spectacular fashion.
Lincoln took the lead on the half hour mark with Anthony Scully nodding home all alone in the box, and by half time it was two, with Jorge Grant sweeping in a penalty.
You would have forgiven Darren Ferguson if he’d lost his mind at half time, but whatever he did say failed to have the desired effect, with Scully soon making it three with a wonder strike from distance seeming to end any Peterborough hopes of a revival.
With 25 to play though, Siriki Dembele decided to have his say, cleverly poking in a Dan Butler cross, and then the Jonson Clarke-Harris show began, deflecting in a free kick for his 30th league goal of the season, before dispatching a dramatic stoppage time penalty.
The Big Picture: After seven seasons, Peterborough return to the Championship, and should be very good value, with their extraordinary nouse at finding goalscorers, and their impressive attacking football, likely to brighten up the second tier.
Stat of the Day: Darren Ferguson has now won four separate promotions with Peterborough, in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2021.
