Inter Milan clinched their first Serie A title in 11 years on Sunday after Sassuolo drew 1-1 with Atalanta to assure Antonio Conte’s side of the league crown and end Juventus’s nine-year reign in Italy.
The Nerazzurri put one hand on the trophy with a 2-0 win against Crotone on Saturday, but Atalanta's 1-1 draw at Sassuolo on Sunday ensured the Serie A leaders retained an unassailable 13-point cushion with four matches left to play.
Inter won their first title since 2011, when they won the Coppa Italia. It's their 19th Serie A title, meaning they have overtaken city rivals AC Milan on 18 to become the second most successful club in Serie A history behind Juventus with 36 titles.
Conte, the mastermind
Antonio Conte is the 13th coach since José Mourinho to sit on Inter's bench and the club has changed hands twice over the past decade.
Inter were incredibly consistent over the season, with just two defeats in 34 league games. They were destined to get the Scudetto this season as they are unbeaten in the league since January 6 (18 games in total), an early exit from the Champions League helping to sharpen their focus on Serie A.
Former Chelsea coach Conte was appointed at the start of season 2019/20 and soon identified strengths and weaknesses in his squad. Clinical in his transfers this season, he build on what Inter had achieved the previous season when they finished one point behind Juventus and were beaten 3-2 by Sevilla in the Europa League final.
An incredible defensive record of just 29 goals conceded in 34 league games, the best in Serie A, allied with the potent strike partnership of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez (who scored a combined 36 league goals) was key to clinching Inter's long-awaited title.
This title success marks the fourth Scudetto triumph in Conte's career. The first three were as Juventus' manager between 2011 and 2014, which means the Italian was responsible for ending the nine-year run of success he himself started at Juve.
