Luis Enrique cuts captain Sergio Ramos from Spain squad

Spain and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been left out of Luis Enrique’s squad for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament after an injury-laden season for the star defender.

Fresh off of conceding the LaLiga title to city rivals Atletico yesterday, Ramos has been informed he hasn’t made the cut, making this the first Spain squad in major tournament history without a single Real Madrid player.

Former treble-winning Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique, has named a 24-man squad, two players short of the allowable number saying: "We are taking 24 players, most have picked 26, but we just added another striker as we value a lot the feeling that each player can participate in any moment. It’s also better to train with this number of players."

Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte looks set to take Ramos’ place after successfully switching allegiances from France to Spain while Brighton’s Robert Sanchez is another Premier League player to make the cut.

Of Ramos’ omission, Luis Enrique said: "I'd like to send a message to Sergio Ramos, our captain, who is not on the list as he has not been able to compete since January in the right condition, or even train with the group. I told him by phone last night, It was difficult and tough, but it's best for the team."
