According to reports in Italy, Spurs are looking to replace the departed Toby Alderweireld with Atalanta's Cristian Romero.
Identified as the club's top transfer target by Tottenham’s new Director of Football Fabio Paratici, Romero is viewed as the long-term replacement for Belgian Alderweireld, who today joined Qatari side Al-Duhail.
Negotiations remain ongoing for Romero and a deal is reportedly close to being agreed.
Romero was named as Serie A's Defender of the Year last season, as Atalanta finished third in the Italian top flight. The Argentine's also posted some impressive stats: top for interceptions (96) and most aerial duels won by a defender (112) in 2020/21.
Two weeks ago, the 23-year-old helped Argentina win the Copa América with stand-out performances that won him a place in the team of the tournament.
