Manchester United have announced that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left the club.

The Red Devils have sacked the Norwegian following an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday.

That result left United seventh in the Premier League - 12 points behind leaders Chelsea with 12 games played.

Poor performances and a terrible run of results, during which United have won just four of 13 games and two of their past eight, including two humiliating home defeats against rivals Liverpool and Man City, have prompted the United board to take action despite awarding Solskjaer with a new three-year contract in the summer.

The 48-year-old Norwegian, who succeeded José Mourinho back in December 2018, will reportedly receive in the region of £7.5m when the Red Devils pay up his contract.

A club statement read: "Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, while the club looks to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season."
