Cole Stockton is a 27 year-old striker. Before last season, his best goal scoring campaign was five goals in League Two. He managed that feat in two different spells with Morecambe. Even in the National League, his best scoring season was five goals in 16 games for Tranmere Rovers.

His career reads 59 league goals in 276 league appearances. 43 of those goals have come in his last two seasons and 58 appearances. The turnaround in his effectiveness in-front of goal has been something quite special.

At risk of becoming a journeyman

In 2011, Stockton began his career at Tranmere with loan spells at Vauxhall Motors and Southport before signing for Morecambe on loan for a season and a half in 2016.

After leaving Tranmere, he signed for Hearts in a spell which did not go well as he failed to score a league goal in 12 appearances. He moved back down south of the border in the January 2018 when he signed for Carlisle but he departed the Cumbrians at the end of the season.

A return to Tranmere was short-lived after leaving the club in the January of 2019 for another loan spell, this time at Wrexham. He managed just one goal in eight National League appearances before re-signing for Morecambe in the summer of 2019, three months after turning 25.

By the age of 25, he had scored just 16 goals in 218 league appearances, having played for seven different clubs in eight years. He signed a two year-deal with Morecambe ahead of the 2019-20 season but only managed five goals in 30 games before the COVID-enforced halt to the season.

There was an imminent danger that Stockton would lose his deal at the end of 2021 and potentially fall out of the league, maybe even the game.

          Developing with Derek

Derek Adams was appointed the manager of Morecambe in November 2019. An immediate improvement in the five months he managed in the 19-20 season was obvious for the club and the team but not necessarily Stockton.

Survival was always an overachievement for the Lancashire club under Jim Bentley but Adams turned Morecambe into a genuine promotion contender and they only missed out on the automatic spots and the top three on the final day of the season.

Stockton was their focal point. His link-up play to allow Carlos Mendes Gomes the opportunity to run opposition defences ragged was key and he managed to find a scoring touch himself.

For the first time in his career he scored more than five goals in a league season and ended up notching 13 goals as Morecambe won the playoffs and were promoted into the third-tier; their highest ever position.

So far this season, Stockton has scored 13 goals in 18 games. His winner against Fleetwood in second-half stoppage-time from inside his own-half at the weekend was the sign of a player that has grown in stature and his mental and technical ability continues to improve.

Forget what has gone before and what might even come in the future, right now, Cole Stockton is one of the, if not the, go-to striker in League One – a level he had only previously managed five goals in 52 appearances. He has now scored more than twice as many in nearly a third of the games played this season - Cole’s stock is on the rise.
