Manchester City confirm Erling Haaland agreement

With the transfer of Erling Haaland to Manchester City being somewhat of an open secret in recent weeks, today Manchester City have confirmed they have an agreement in place with Borussia Dortmund.

The statement on the Manchester City website is short and sweet, saying simply: “Manchester City can confirm we have reached an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of striker Erling Haaland to the Club on 1st July 2022.

“The transfer remains subject to the Club finalising terms with the player.”

Although City fans should hardly worry about the caveat at the end, according to various reports the Norwegian international – who has scored 85 goals in 88 games for Dortmund – has already agreed to sign for the club and is set to become the joint-top wage earner at the Etihad alongside Kevin De Bruyne. The fee is expected to be €60million or about £51million – a bargain price for a player of his quality.

Manager Pep Guardiola was coy with the media earlier today in his pre-match press conference about the future of the player, although the Spanish coach is no doubt delighted to have a world-class striker at the club following last season's ill-fated pursuit of Harry Kane.

It also sets up an exciting challenge for the player who turns just 22 years-old in summer. Of course, Haaland's father, Alf-Inge, briefly represented Manchester City after stints with Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.
