You could forgive Barcelona for taking their foot off the pedal having wrapped up the Primera Iberdrola title with six games to spare after trashing rivals Real Madrid 5-0.
At that point, The Catalan side had won all 24 of their league games but no team in Spanish football history had managed to go a full season without dropping a single point.
Until yesterday. With a 2-1 victory at home to Atlético Madrid, Jonatan Giráldez’s team wrapped up the league with a perfect record: 30 games – 30 victories.
Out of those 30 games, Barcelona scored a staggering 159 while conceding just 11 – a mighty goal difference of +148.
Of the top ten goalscorers in the league this season, SIX are Barcelona players: Asisat Oshoala (20), Alexia Putellas (18), Lieke Martens (16), Jenni Hermoso (16), Clàudia Pina (15 – 9 of them from the bench!), and Aitana Bonmatí (13).
Throughout the entire season, Barça have been totally dominant. They won the Supercopa de España Femenina with a 7-0 thrashing of Atlético in the final after leaving it late against Real Madrid in the semi-final.
In the Copa de la Reina, the Culés are into the semi-finals and are very much the favourites. They face third-place Real Madrid in the semi-final and should they win that as expected, will take on either Sporting de Huelva or UDG Tenerife in the final. Again, it’s hard to look past Barcelona.
The Champions League beckons too with the club aiming to complete a quadruple. The only game Barça haven’t won this season (43 wins out of 44 games) was in the semi-final when they lost the second leg of their game to Wolfsburg. Although, in defence of the Catalan side, they had already won the first leg convincingly 5-1.
Barcelona can top off their perfect season by defending their Champions League crown next weekend when they take on the tournament’s most dominant team, Lyon. With Putellas and co so dominant at home, it may well take a European force to stop them.
