The last matchday of 2021/22 should be a cracker

Seven final day successes to inspire Liverpool and Inter

As the 30th Premier League season draws to a close, there is all to play for as Manchester City and Liverpool both head into the final matchday gunning for the title.

Pep Guardiola's defending champions host Aston Villa - managed by former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard - knowing a win would clinch their fourth Premier League title over the last five seasons.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, however, are still dreaming of an unprecedented Quadruple and they will aim to beat Wolves at Anfield in the hope that Gerrard's Villans can throw a spanner in the works at the Etihad Stadium.

Since the Premier League's maiden campaign back in 1992/93, the title has been undecided going into the final matchday of the season on only NINE occasions - and it promises to be an epic end to a fabulous season.

The drama is not exclusive to England either - as Serie A is in much the same boat.

AC Milan may not have won the league in Italy since 2010/11, but they are just one point from winning the Scudetto - and a draw or a win will see Stefano Pioli's men lift the title this weekend.

The Rossoneri head to Sassuolo on Sunday as favourites, but their crosstown rivals are still in the hunt. Last season's champions Inter trail Milan by two points and can pip their rivals to the title if they beat Sampdoria, and Milan lose.

With everything on the line in the Premier League and Serie A, we trawled the archives of UEFA's 'Top 5' leagues - going back to 1992/93 - to find out a) which title races have been undecided going into the ultimate matchday and b) which champions leapfrogged the league leaders on the final day to clinch glory.

Serie A: 7 occasions (98/99, 99/00, 00/01, 01/02, 07/08, 09/10, 21/22)

La Liga: 10 occasions (92/93, 93/94, 99/00, 02/03, 06/07, 09/10, 13/14, 15/16, 16/17, 20/21)

Although a second-placed side has yet to leapfrog the final matchday leaders in Premier League history, the phenomenon has been observed around Europe - and Liverpool and Inter fans should take note, and heart, from the following slideshow.
