In their final friendly before Saturday's Community Shield against Manchester City, Liverpool were defeated by Red Bull Salzburg 1-0 in Austria.
Liverpool's new arrival Darwin Nunez looked threatening in the opening 25 minutes, having a couple of chances to score but couldn't find the back of the net.
The hosts had a glorious chance to take the lead, seconds after Nuñez hit the crossbar, after Joe Gomez misplayed a headed clearance and, following a kick save from Liverpool's goalkeeper Adrian on a close-range shot by Benjamin Sesko, and on the rebound, in a near-empty goal, Fernando clipped wide.
The Austrian side, minutes later, broke the deadlock when Man Utd target Sesko finished off a fine team move with a composed finish into the bottom corner.
Jurgen Klopp's men improved significantly after the break and the changes, with Luis Diaz close to level the game, only to be denied Salzburg keeper Nico Mantl.
Diaz had the ball in the back of the net eight minutes from time, but the goal was ruled out for offside as Roberto Firmino's through ball was a second late to the Colombia international and the linesman's flag went up.
The Reds will now focus on their first official game of the season, on Saturday for the Community Shield against Manchester City at the King Power Stadium.
